Overview
Amrita Hospital's telemedicine service is a pioneering initiative in Kerala, established in September 2002 with the support of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The telemedicine center was created to help those who face challenges such as cost, travel barriers, and lack of awareness to access medical care across India.

Teleconsultation
- To remote locations across India, from the islands of Lakshadweep to the mountains of Leh and beyond, working to close the healthcare gap.
- Through video conferencing offers primary specialist diagnosis, second opinions, treatment recommendations, and post-treatment advice based on clinical details and lab/radiology investigations.
- Remote doctors can have consultations with specialists, with or without the presence of the patient.
- Over 5000 teleconsultations have been provided in the past decade.

- Amrita Hospital conducted the first telesurgery in India.
- Remote doctor can have teleconsultation with expert surgeon for operations.
Telecardiology
· Real time transmission of echocardiograms from the outreach site to the tertiary care site.
- Successfully conducting tele cardiology programs connecting remote centers like IGH Kavaratti, Agatti, SNM Ley Ladakh, and Civil Hospital Shillong.
Teleradiology
- Electronic transmission of radiographic images and consultative text.
- Faster diagnoses and improved patient care.
- Provided consultations to RK Mission Hospital Itanagar and Lakshadweep centers.
Teledermatology
· Provides a channel for interaction with dermatology experts.
Teleophthalmology
- Digital retinal imaging for diagnosing and monitoring diabetic retinopathy.
Telepsychiatry
· Used for assessment and treatment, case conferencing, and consultation-liaison work.
Telemonitoring
- Remote monitoring of critically ill patients.
- One of the successful implementations of telemonitoring happened on January 13th, 2003 at Amrita Emergency Care Unit in Pampa, Sabarimala. Cardiovascular thoracic surgeon guided procedure remotely while doctor at emergency unit performed it successfully, saving patient's life.
Telepathology
- Tele-Pathology consultations allow pathologists to send microscopic images to other experts in real time, potentially benefiting patients and medicine.
Amrita has provided Tele-Pathology consultations to locations such as SNM Leh Ladakh and GBPH Port Blair.
Mobile Telemedicine Unit
- The Amrita Mobile Telemedicine Unit (AMTU) is the first mobile telemedicine unit in Kerala.
- The AMTU is equipped with state-of-the-art satellite-based videoconferencing technology.
- Range of medical equipment available on the AMTU includes color echocardiography, cardiac treadmill, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, retinal camera, ultrasonography, X-ray radiography, electrocardiography, biochemical testing, light microscopy, and digital photography.
Distant Education Programs
- Medical courses are conducted for students, doctors, and specialists remotely.
Continuing Medical Education Programs
- Amrita Hospital offers continuing medical education (CME) for doctors, specialists, and nurses through tele-education, training, and information sharing via seminars, workshops, and grand rounds.
- Over 700 CME programs, conferences, and case discussions have been conducted, broadcasted to remote medical institutes and colleges.
- CME offerings include regular CMEs, national and international seminars, conferences, workshops, and grand rounds.
Pan African Project
- Amrita Hospital's telemedicine center selected by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to provide telemedicine and CME services to 53 healthcare centers in the African subcontinent.
- Project to extend healthcare services to rural Africa by linking African hospitals to one remote hospital in each of the 53 countries.
Amrita Village Resource Centers (VRC) Network
- Amrita has collaborations with ISRO to establish Village Resource Centers (VRC) in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- VRCs aim to bring the benefits of satellite technology to rural masses through services such as teleconferencing in medical and agricultural fields, IT programs, and computer training.
Amrita E-learning Network
- Amrita University is connected to the world of knowledge through its prestigious satellite networks, specifically the ISRO edusat network that provides a two-way audio-video communication channel.
This high bandwidth satellite network makes Amrita University a fully interactive, multimedia-capable, multi-disciplinary virtual university, the first of its kind in the nation without geographical constraints.
