The Department of General Medicine at Amrita Hospital, Kochi is one of the largest general medicine department in Kerala. Our department serves as a central hub for comprehensive medical care with special emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex medical illnesses. Also focussed on education and research to improve the patient outcome and advance medical knowledge. The department of General Medicine follows an integrated approach in inpatient and outpatient care and aims at providing seamless continuity from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.

• Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG): Used to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart, helping diagnose cardiac conditions such as arrhythmias, ischemia, or structural abnormalities. 
• Pulmonary Function Tests: Assess lung function and diagnose conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or interstitial lung disease. 
   

Procedures  

• Central Line Placement: Insertion of a catheter into a large vein, typically in the neck, chest, or groin, for long-term IV access, medication administration, or hemodialysis. 
• Paracentesis and Thoracentesis: Removal of fluid from the abdominal (ascites) or pleural (pleural effusion) cavities, respectively, for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. 
• Lumbar Puncture: Also known as a spinal tap, involves inserting a needle into the spinal canal to obtain cerebrospinal fluid for diagnostic purposes or to administer medications. 
• Bone Marrow Biopsy: Extraction of bone marrow tissue from the hip bone for diagnostic evaluation of blood disorders, cancers, or infections. 

• Routine check-ups: We perform regular health assessments, including physical examinations, blood pressure checks, and screenings for various health conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and cancer. 
• Medication management: We prescribe medications to treat acute and chronic illnesses, and to monitor patients' responses to medications to ensure effectiveness and safety. 
• Preventive care: Emphasize the importance of preventive care measures such as vaccinations, screenings, and lifestyle modifications (e.g., healthy diet, regular exercise, smoking cessation) to help patients maintain optimal health and prevent future health problems. 
• Referrals to specialists: If necessary, refer patients to specialists for further evaluation and management of specific health conditions. . 
• Counseling and patient education: Provide counseling and education to patients about their health conditions, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications.
