Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a method to familiarize yourself with how your breasts look and feel by checking them regularly. While BSE is not necessarily a substitute for professional screenings, it is a helpful way to maintain breast self-awareness. Knowing your body can help you notice changes such as lumps or abnormal discharge early.
You can perform a BSE monthly, occasionally, or not at all, as long as you are aware of how your breasts typically feel. Both men and women can develop breast cancer, so breast awareness is important for everyone.
When to Do a Breast Self-Exam
The best time to conduct a BSE is when your breasts are not tender or swollen. For those who menstruate, it's ideal to do the exam a few days after your period ends.
How to Do a Breast Self-Exam
There are two primary ways to perform a breast self-exam: in front of a mirror and while lying down. Here's how to do both:
In Front of a Mirror
- Stand in front of a mirror with your breasts exposed.
- Press your hands firmly on your hips and observe for any changes in the size, shape, or skin of your breasts. Look for dimpling, redness, or any abnormal discharge from the nipples.
Raise one arm slightly to check the underarm for any lumps or changes. Repeat the process with the other arm. Be sure not to raise your arms completely, as this tightens the tissue, making it harder to examine.
While Lying Down
1. Lie down on your back with a pillow or towel under one shoulder. Place the corresponding arm behind your head.
2. Use the pads of the three middle fingers on the opposite hand to examine the breast in a circular motion. Apply light, medium, and firm pressure to feel different layers of the tissue.
3. Follow an up-and-down (vertical) pattern, starting at the underarm and moving toward the middle of the chest. Repeat on the other side.
