Sreekutty, a native of Palode, Thiruvananthapuram, who was undergoing treatment for serious injuries sustained in the Varkala train attack that shocked Kerala, is returning to life. After months of intensive care and treatment, Sreekutty was discharged from Amrita Hospital, Kochi, on Monday. This young girl is stepping back into life through extraordinary willpower from the brink of death.
Following initial treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, Sreekutty was admitted to Amrita Hospital on 25th December, 2025. At the time of admission, she was unconscious and struggling to breathe due to severe brain injury. She had also suffered an injury to her left shoulder. Her subsequent treatment was led by Dr. Ravi Shankaran, Head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), along with Dr. Anand Raja and their team. A tracheostomy was performed to assist her breathing, and a feeding tube was inserted for nutritional support.
As part of an intensive, multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation program, she received structured rehabilitation interventions including oxygen therapy, respiratory training, swallow therapy, cognitive stimulation, and progressive mobility training. A coordinated, multidisciplinary effort involving the departments of ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Neurology, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology played a critical role in her recovery. Today, Sreekutty has regained the ability to eat independently, walk and speak—an outcome her family describes as nothing short of miraculous. Throughout her long course of treatment, her mother, Priya, remained steadfastly by her side. Their home in Palode, which had been anxiously awaiting her recovery with prayers and hope, is now filled with joy.
It was after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's direct intervention that Sreekutty was shifted to Amrita Hospital, Kochi, for expert treatment. The Mata Amritanandamayi Math undertook the entire cost of the treatment. The Math provided expert treatment costing lakhs of rupees completely free of charge.
Sreekutty’s life was upended in early November 2025 while she was traveling on the Kerala Express. She was allegedly pushed out of the moving train by a co-passenger under the influence of narcotics. Yet, with unwavering determination and fighting spirit, she now returns to her beloved Palode on Monday—symbolizing a powerful triumph of life over tragedy.
