Amrita Hospital, Kochi, has successfully treated a rare and life-threatening complication in a twin pregnancy, giving new life to twin fetuses. The mother, Shruti, a native of Mannantala, Thiruvananthapuram, residing in Dubai, was diagnosed with a tumor called placental chorioangioma in the placenta during her 21st week of pregnancy.
The condition, known to cause heart failure and even death in fetuses, posed a severe risk to both babies. Seeking advanced medical care, Shruti approached Amrita Hospital, where a team of experts, led by Dr. Vivek Krishnan, Head of the Department of Fetal Medicine, employed a groundbreaking procedure called glue embolization.
This technique selectively blocked blood flow to the tumor while ensuring uninterrupted blood supply from the placenta to the fetuses, preserving their health. The innovative treatment marked the first time glue embolization was successfully used in a twin pregnancy.
Following the treatment, the mother returned to Dubai and delivered healthy twins at 36 weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Vivek Krishnan, along with Dr. Dhanya Keezhatoor and Dr. Shruti Soman, spearheaded this remarkable medical achievement.
