Amrita Hospital, Kochi successfully treated a 51-year-old woman who had a surgical instrument left inside her abdomen following a previous surgery. The patient, Usha Joseph Kutty, a native of Punnapra in Alappuzha district, underwent surgery at Amrita Hospital and discharged on Tuesday, March 3rd 2026. The entire treatment, including surgery and hospital care, was provided completely free of cost by Mata Amritanandamayi Math.

Usha had undergone a hysterectomy in 2021 from a hospital at Alappuzha. She had been experiencing persistent abdominal pain since then. During a recent medical evaluation, an X-ray examination revealed that an artery forceps had remained inside her abdomen from the earlier surgery.

Following this discovery, she approached Amrita Hospital, Kochi for treatment. A multidisciplinary surgical team led by Dr. Sudheer O. V, Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, performed a surgery on Saturday and successfully removed the artery forceps from her abdomen. The surgical team also included Dr. K. V. Sanjeevan, Head of the Department of Urology, and Dr. Radhamani K., Head of the Department of Gynecology. As the incident is currently under legal investigation, the surgery was conducted in the presence of two doctors from Government Medical College, Kalamassery.

Doctors at Amrita Hospital stated that the patient responded well to the procedure and her condition is stable. After post-operative care and observation, she has made a good recovery and is being discharged.
