In observance of World Cancer Day 2026, Amrita Hospital, Kochi organised a World Cancer Awareness Walkathon, reaffirming its commitment to cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection. The initiative was organised by MBBS students in collaboration with the Department of Oncology and witnessed active participation from healthcare professionals, students, and staff.
The walkathon commenced from the hospital premises and proceeded to Changampuzha Park, accompanied by awareness talks by doctors focusing on early diagnosis, prevention, and the need to address social stigma associated with cancer. The programme featured expert interactions by Dr. Soudamini Nayak, Assistant Professor, Breast Diseases Division; Dr. K. Pavithran, Head, Medical Oncology; Dr. Sandhya K. N., Assistant Professor, Preventive Oncology; Dr. Dinesh Balakrishnan, Clinical Professor, GI Surgery; and Dr. Sivakumar, Professor, Health Sciences Research.
A key highlight of the event was an interaction with CanServe, a community of cancer survivors, who shared their personal journeys and treatment experiences at Amrita, offering messages of resilience and hope. Adding further impact, MBBS students staged a street play that sensitively conveyed the importance of early detection and timely treatment.
The walkathon also underscored Amrita Hospital’s leadership in comprehensive cancer care, with its multidisciplinary approach encompassing advanced radiation therapies, robotic and minimally invasive surgeries, molecular oncology diagnostics, targeted and immunotherapies, and pioneering treatments such as CAR T-cell therapy. Supported by tumour boards, onco-rehabilitation services, and holistic care programmes, Amrita continues to set benchmarks in personalised cancer treatment.
The student organisers—Sneha Daga, Shobhiyaa Panneer, and Nihal Noushad—played a key role in coordinating the programme, which concluded with a strong message that awareness, early action, and compassionate care can make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.
