We are aware of misinformation circulating on social media regarding a person from the transgender community being forced to undergo conversion therapy at Amrita Hospital, Kochi under Dr. Bindu Menon, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry. We strongly assert that conversion therapy is not a medical practice endorsed by our institution and is, in fact, illegal. It is unfortunate that an organization committed to hope, holistic healing, wellness, and humanity is being alleged of such practices without any clarification.

Amrita Hospital has always been at the forefront of promoting inclusive healthcare. As both a hospital and a university, we are deeply committed to research, innovation, and medical education, providing quality healthcare to all.

In 2017, Amrita Hospital, Kochi performed the first gender affirmation surgery in Kerala. We have since established a dedicated Gender Affirmation Clinic, bringing together various departments including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Endocrinology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Urology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Gynecology, and ENT to ensure a smooth transition for the transgender community.

Recently, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Tourism, Suresh Gopi, pledged his support to the transgender community in partnership with Amrita Hospital, Kochi, by funding gender reassignment surgeries through the Lakshmi Charitable Trust.

We believe in a world that is inclusive and free from inhumane medical practices. We urge everyone to refrain from spreading unverified information.

For any clarifications or further information, please contact Amrita Hospital directly.
