Overview

Perinatology, also known as maternal-fetal medicine, is concerned with the specialized care of the mother and fetus in complicated, high-risk pregnancies. The Perinatology Division at Amrita is an integral component of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is committed to providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for conditions affecting the expectant mother and fetus. Diagnostic and consultative services focused on high-risk obstetrics.

  • Skilled in the management and counseling of pregnancies complicated by fetal abnormalities, including growth disorders, inherited diseases, and structural malformations. 
  • Full range of ultrasound services, including specialized scans for multi-fetal pregnancies.
  • Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Offers therapies for conditions affecting the fetus and various complexities impacting pregnancies involving twins and similar situations.

 

Services Offered

  • Regularly conducted scans specific to certain conditions or pregnancies involving multiple fetuses
  • Specialized scans or multi-fetal pregnancies are also routinely done. 
  • Scheduled prenatal diagnostic consultation and targeted ultrasound examinations are available through the division six days a week. 
  • Invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed four days a week.

Achievements

  • The department of fetal medicine has completed 400 fetal therapy procedures till April 2023
  • India’s first fetal surgery of its kind, surgeons successfully operate on a 22-week-old baby in the mother’s womb in 2018

Facilities Offered

  • Full range of ultrasound services, including antepartum scans in the first, second and third trimesters, Down syndrome screening, Fetal ECHO, 3D/4D ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided procedures. 
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, umbilical cord blood sampling, intra uterine transfusion and multifetal pregnancy reduction.

 

  • Diagnostic and treatment procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, umbilical cord blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion, and reduction of multifetal pregnancies, are carried out.
