Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, has once again demonstrated its expertise in advanced thoracic surgery by successfully treating a rare lung tumor in a 58-year-old patient from Bihar. Hari Narayan Singh, who had been struggling with persistent breathlessness and wheezing initially misdiagnosed as asthma, finally found clarity and care at Amrita Hospital.
A CT scan revealed an endobronchial carcinoid tumor obstructing Singh’s airway—a condition that accounts for less than 5% of lung tumors. After multiple hospitals turned him away, Singh approached Amrita Hospital for specialized care.
Dr. Sameer Bhate, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, led a lung-sparing sleeve resection procedure, removing the tumor while preserving healthy lung tissue. “What made this case unique was not just the rarity of the tumor, but the opportunity to save his lung,” said Dr. Sameer Bhate. The surgery was performed through an open technique and completed without complications.
The success was the result of close collaboration with the hospital’s pulmonology team, including Dr. Arjun Khanna, Dr. Sourabh Pahuja, and Dr. Pradeep Bajad, whose timely diagnosis and bronchoscopy expertise paved the way for precision surgery.
Hari Narayan Singh expressed his gratitude, saying, “I had never heard of this disease, but the doctors explained everything calmly and clearly. I felt I was in the safest hands.”
Amrita Hospital Faridabad continues to prioritize advanced surgical techniques that preserve patients’ quality of life. This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, especially for rare and potentially life-threatening conditions, and underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing compassionate, cutting-edge care to patients from across the country.
Dr. Sameer Bhate added, “Had this tumor gone undetected, it could have led to fatal bleeding. We hope to extend these capabilities to more rural patients who need specialized care.”
