Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, organised Scoliosis & SMA Care Connect, a multidisciplinary and interactive session for individuals living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and their families. The programme was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, with the aim of raising awareness about scoliosis and the importance of comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with SMA.
SMA is a rare genetic disorder, with scoliosis being one of the most common spinal deformities associated with the condition, particularly among individuals with SMA Type 2 and Type 3. Progressive scoliosis can affect mobility and function and may have an impact on respiratory and gastrointestinal health, making timely assessment and appropriate management essential.
The session brought together multidisciplinary experts who provided patients and families with insights into the various aspects of SMA and scoliosis care. Key areas discussed included spine and scoliosis management, orthopaedic care, respiratory health, gastrointestinal care and nutrition, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, orthotics, and neurological care and recent advances.
The experts emphasised that managing complex spinal deformities associated with SMA requires a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. Close collaboration among specialists, patients, and families can help develop personalised care plans addressing the diverse healthcare needs of individuals with SMA.
The programme highlighted the importance of integrated care in supporting mobility, functional independence, overall health, and quality of life for patients living with SMA and scoliosis.
