In a compelling story of medical courage and collaborative care, a 57-year-old patient from Nagaland has successfully recovered after undergoing complex open-heart surgery and advanced post-operative management at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.
Mr. Akuminba, a resident of Nagaland, was suffering from a host of life-threatening health issues, including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, chronic hypertension, and severe renal dysfunction requiring dialysis. He had previously experienced acute pulmonary edema and had been diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), for which a failed angioplasty attempt had already been made elsewhere. With his condition worsening and heart function severely compromised, he was referred to Amrita Hospital in a critical state.
Upon evaluation by Dr. Urmila Anandh the head of nephrology it was decided to refer this patient for Coronary artery bypass surgery. Dialysis was initiated urgently and following a week of dialysis patient was referred to Dr Sameer Bhate, Senior Consultant and Head, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery.
The patient had multi-vessel coronary artery disease and a severely reduced Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) of just 30–35%, indicating advanced heart failure. He had sequels of long term Diabetes which had resulted in blindness in one eye due to retinopathy.
“This was one of the most high-risk cases we have managed recently. Mr. Akuminba was battling not just cardiac failure, but also significant renal impairment and long-standing diabetes. We performed a successful Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) using three grafts and monitored him closely through a multi-specialty approach. His recovery is truly a result of clinical precision and patient resilience,” said Dr. Sameer Bhate. Dr Sameer Bhate lead a team comprising of Cardiac Anaesthetists Dr. Dheeraj Arora, Dr. Ishrat Rawoot, Dr. Shweta Panse and Dr. Prabhat Chaudhary and Perfusionists Ravi Deshpande. The post op care was managed by the diligent cardiac icu nurses.
Today, Mr. Akuminba is ambulatory and stable, preparing to return to Nagaland.
Mr. Akuminba: “I arrived at Amrita Hospital in fear, with very little hope. But the doctors here gave me a second chance. From the ICU to the rehab team, every person gave me the strength to fight. I am grateful beyond words.”
While his prognosis remains guarded due to ongoing dialysis and long-term complications, Mr. Akuminba’s case is a shining example of what a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach can achieve—even in extremely high-risk cases. Dr. Urmila and Dr. Harsha are encouraging the patient to undergo a Kidney Transplant to further improve the quality of life now that the patient can withstand a transplant, as his heart is fixed.
Amrita Hospital continues to serve patients from remote parts of India, including the North East, offering advanced surgical capabilities and holistic recovery support under one roof.
