In a remarkable medical milestone, Amrita Hospital Faridabad performed a double hand transplant for a 44-year-old woman from Dilshad Garden, Delhi, restoring her life after years of severe disability.

The patient had suffered extensive electric burns from a 14,000-volt high-tension line on September 4, 2022, resulting in the amputation of her left hand on September 10, 2022, and her right hand on March 6, 2023. Determined to regain functionality, she explored advanced treatment options and registered for a hand transplantation procedure at Amrita Hospital on May 27, 2025, through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).

In the early hours of September 26, 2025, the patient received life-changing news: a brain-dead donor from Surat had consented to donate both hands. The Amrita Hospital surgical and retrieval teams swiftly mobilized. While the retrieval team procured the donor hands from Surat, preparations for the transplant were underway at Amrita Hospital. By 12:30 AM on September 27, the team commenced the complex transplant procedure.

The successful surgery was made possible through the exceptional coordination and expertise of the hospital’s multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Mohit Sharma, Head of Plastic Surgery, who ensured meticulous planning and execution.

This life-changing intervention not only exemplifies the transformative potential of organ donation but also resonates with the “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Pariwar” initiative championed by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, highlighting the importance of women’s health and empowerment in India.

The patient now embarks on a new journey of rehabilitation, with the hope of regaining full functionality and independence, thanks to the generosity of the donor family and the team at Amrita Hospital.
