In a groundbreaking surgical feat, the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad has achieved a remarkable milestone. They successfully performed the world's first robotic-assisted surgery for a rare colonic tumour. This achievement was made challenging by a unique anatomical variation.;
The patient, from Uzbekistan, had a special condition where his liver and colon were positioned differently (situs inversus partial) and he had a malignant tumour in his colon. Despite the challenges that this case posed, the skilled surgical team successfully performed robotic-assisted surgery to remove the cancerous growth from the patient's colon in around 6 hours.
The procedure was led by Dr. Puneet Dhar, Head, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, who was accompanied by Dr. Saleem Naik, Senior Consultant, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Dr. Abhishek Agrawal, Consultant, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
"This achievement demonstrates that by leveraging technology combined with skills, it is possible to achieve precision in surgery which was deemed impossible in the past. Proper patient selection and a multidisciplinary team approach are keys to a successful outcome,” said Dr. Abhishek Agrawal.
“This journey represents more than just a surgical triumph, it embodies the spirit of innovation, collaboration and compassionate care that defines our Institution."
