
Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, conducted a comprehensive Continuing Medical Education (CME) program focused on the latest advancements in cataract surgery. The event, brought together some of India’s leading ophthalmologists and subject experts, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge-sharing and clinical excellence in cataract care.
The CME program began with a ceremonial lamp lighting, conducted by Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Medical Director of Amrita Hospital, Padma Bhushan Dr. Noshir Shroff, Chairperson for the CME, Dr. Pankaj Kataria, President of the FOS, and Prof. (Dr.) Meenakshi Dhar, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology. The inauguration was followed by a heartfelt welcome address from Prof. Meenakshi Dhar, who acknowledged the unwavering support of Dr. Sanjeev Singh and paid tribute to Dr. Noshir Shroff, a pioneer in IOL implantation and phacoemulsification in India. Dr. Shroff’s presence at the event significantly enriched the academic value of the program.
Session 1: Innovations in Cataract Management
The first session, moderated by Dr. Amrita Chaturvedi and Dr. Rashmi Mittal, explored groundbreaking advancements in cataract management. The speakers included Dr. Nikhil Seth, who discussed delivering clear cornea with OZIL technology; Dr. Ikeda Lal, who focused on IOL power calculation in post-RK eyes; and Dr. Amrita Chaturvedi, who presented on next-generation monofocal IOLs. Other highlights included talks by Dr. Ritu Aurora on spherophakia management, Dr. Navin Sakhuja on trifocal technology for patient satisfaction, Dr. Rashmi Mittal on cataract surgery in Fuchs endothelial dystrophy, and Dr. Anita Sethi on new generation presbyopia-correcting IOLs. The session provided valuable insights into the latest in phacoemulsification techniques, IOL technologies, and patient-specific approaches for optimizing surgical outcomes.
Session 2: Complex Case Handling & Surgical Pearls
The second session, moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Meenakshi Dhar and Dr. Chitralekha De, focused on complex case handling and surgical pearls in cataract surgery. Dr. Umang Mathur presented on astigmatism correction as a visual necessity, while Dr. Chitralekha De discussed preoperative retina evaluation. Dr. R.P. Singh’s talk on anterior vitrectomy and complication management, as well as Dr. Meenakshi Y Dhar’s session on managing subluxated cataracts, were well received. Dr. Reena Sethi covered refractive surprises in cataract surgery, and Dr. Avnindra Gupta shared innovations for complex surgical situations. This session emphasized integrating retina and corneal assessments into cataract surgery management for better visual outcomes.
The CME offered key takeaways, including strategies for managing post-RK eyes and subluxated cataracts, advances in IOL technology (monofocal, trifocal, and presbyopia-correcting), and practical pearls on anterior vitrectomy and managing intraoperative surprises. Attendees praised the event, highlighting its academic depth, clinical relevance, and interactive format. The CME concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rashmi Mittal acknowledging the contributions of the esteemed faculty, organizers, and participants who made the event a resounding success.
