
Mr.Suresh Kumar, a 52-years old man from Kollam, battled a large malignant tumour weighing 17kg, rendering him almost bedridden. His life got transformed after a ground breaking surgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. The tumour's growth started from his right upper arm, the tumour grew out on to his chest and back, affecting his breathing and heart too. Sureshtook many medical consultations and it was found that the tumour is cancerous and too complicated to remove. The complications involved in the surgery were life threatening and many doctors were not ready to take the risk of removing the tumour that could affect the functions of the heart and lungs as well. Knowing the risk involved the team of experts from Amrita Hospital took on the daunting task. Dr. Sundeep Vijayaraghavan, Head, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, led the surgery. Dr. Rohik Micka, Dr. Sidharth Viswanathan, Dr. Jerry Paul, Dr. Sunil Rajan, Dr. Chandra Singh, Dr. Durga, M. Lakshmi and Sheyon Yohannan were the other medical experts involved in the complicated surgery. The multidisciplinary team including the departments of Vascular Surgery, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery played a pivotal role to save Mr. Suresh Kumar's life. Regrettably, Suresh lost his right hand due to the tumour’s extent, but the surgery saved his life. Following meticulous care and rehabilitation, he was discharged from the hospital, with biopsy results indicating no traces of the tumour. The medical marvel has left Suresh with a newfound lease on life.
