
Amrita Hospital, Kochi hosted 'Amrithanganam: Embracing Uniqueness,' a special day for children with Down syndrome and their families. More than 50 kids and parents from various parts of Kerala gathered at Amrita Hospital, Kochi for a day filled with exploration and celebration.
The event began with a specially curated theatre workshop by Devendranath Sankaranarayanan (founder of InsideOut Performance Collective), bringing smiles, dances, and unforgettable memories for the children and their families. The three-hour session became a canvas of emotions, as the participants sang, danced, and roared with joy.
The day also featured a session for parents, where experts addressed the unique challenges faced by children with Down syndrome. The discussions highlighted the crucial role of collaboration among families, medical caregivers, and volunteer organizations. Global experts shared observations, experiences, and expertise, fostering a collective effort towards better understanding and support.
Actor Sunny Wayne graced the closing ceremony, surprising the children with his presence. He applauded parents for creating a fabulous support system and emphasized the importance of not pressurizing children. Sunny Wayne asserted that it's not 'down syndrome' but an opportunity to love and let children be free. The event also included felicitations, including mesmerizing dance recital by Sudhamayi Sreeram, a girl who faught against Down syndrome and achieved a meaningful life.
The program included moderated sessions for parents, and expert discussions covering topics from early intervention to societal integration.
Esteemed speakers, including Dr. Shaji Thomas John (Baby memorial hospital), Dr.Vinayan (Paediatric neurology, Amrita hospital), Dr. Jayakumar (Head,Pediatrics, Amrita hospital), Dr. Brijesh(CVTS ,Pediatric Cardiac surgeon, Amrita hospital) Dr. Nisha (Paediatric Endocrinology, Amrita Hospital) Dr. Madhumitha and Dr. Sheela Nampoothiri (Paediatric Genetics, Amrita) contributed to discussions on counseling, legal implications, and uncertainties in screening processes. The multidisciplinary approach involved experts in genetics, cardiology, endocrinology, pediatric surgery, developmental pediatrics, general pediatrics, and neonatology. Distinguished guest faculties included Dr. Surekha Ramachandran, Dr.MKC Nair and Ms. Lauren Costabile. Societal integration was explored, touching on marriage, independence, employability, and support systems. The event also aimed to improve awareness and governmental support, with inspiring stories shared by patients and parents.
Hosted by Dr. Krishnakumar, Head, Pediatric cardiology, Amrita hospital, Kochi and other eminent faculty members, 'Amrithanganam' promised a comprehensive exploration of Down syndrome-related issues. The grand closing ceremony featured celebrities Sunny Wayne, Lakshmi Priya, and Manuraj, along with cultural performances by children with Down syndrome and mothers from Philipines, felicitating Adarsh School and AIDA for their exception contribution to kids with Down syndrome adding a beautiful finale to this heartwarming day of embracing uniqueness.
