The Department of Endocrinology and Podiatric Surgery provides comprehensive care for diabetic lower limb problems using an integrated team approach. The department specializes in surgical correction of diabetic foot and ankle deformities. This type of surgery to reshape deformed feet or toes is currently only performed in a few countries, including the US, UK, Russia, Germany, Spain, and Australia.
The department has developed a new technique called "The Amrita Sling Technique" to stabilize the foot and ankle in patients with destroyed Charcot foot and ankle. This novel technique avoids the complications associated with external fixators, such as pin-tract infections and wire breakage, which can be serious in diabetic patients.
The hospital has been hosting the international "Amrita Diabetic Foot Conference" (A.D.F.C.) annually since 2009. The conference features lectures and live surgical demonstrations by renowned podiatric surgeons from the United States and also invites endocrinologists from other countries with a special interest in diabetic foot management.
