Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, in collaboration with Medtronic, conducted the Multi-Organ Retrieval Cadaveric Hands-on Masterclass, combining academic sessions with practical training to strengthen surgical skills in deceased donor organ retrieval. The program brought together eight participants, with three cadavers used for hands-on training under expert faculty guidance.
Led by Dr. Shaleen Agarwal, Col. Dr. Dronacharya Routh and Col. Dr. Priya Ranjan, the masterclass addressed the clinical, anatomical, legal, and logistical aspects of multi-organ retrieval, emphasizing deceased donor maintenance and systematic surgical technique.
The academic sessions covered the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), diagnosis of brain death, maintenance of the deceased donor, and cadaveric anatomy relevant to multi-organ procurement, steps of multi-organ retrieval supported by video presentation.
The cadaveric training sessions enabled participants to apply these principles in a structured learning environment. Working across three cadavers, participants practiced the operative steps of organ retrieval, strengthened their understanding of relevant anatomy, and discussed technical considerations with the faculty. The program concluded with a practical debrief, discussion on further skill development in HPB surgery, and certificate distribution.
Building on this collaboration, Amrita Hospital plans to expand its cadaveric surgical training programs to include laparoscopic hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery and living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Future plans also include collaboration with the Liver Transplantation Society of India (LTSI) to develop structured training modules, standardized competency assessment, and certification pathways. This proposed collaboration aims to strengthen academic credibility, promote consistency in training, and establish clear benchmarks for surgical skill development.
The initiative reflects Amrita Hospital’s commitment to advancing surgical education and developing specialized, standardized training opportunities in HPB surgery and liver transplantation.
