In a series of unprecedented medical interventions, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, has successfully performed high-risk fetal surgeries, saving multiple unborn babies and giving new hope to families facing life-threatening complications.

A Baby Born Twice

At 28 weeks of pregnancy, one unborn baby developed hydrops fetalis due to congenital chylothorax, a rare condition causing fluid accumulation in the lungs. Dr. Reema Bhatt, Head of Fetal Medicine, performed a thoracoamniotic shunt surgery, draining fluid from the baby’s chest while still in the womb. Following an emergency delivery at 30 weeks, the newborn underwent intensive care under Dr. Nidhi Gupta, Senior Consultant, Neonatology, and recovered fully after seven weeks.

Seventeen Years of Waiting, Saved in 21 Weeks

A 38-year-old IVF mother faced a rare placental tumor (chorangioma) causing fetal hydrops. Instead of repeated transfusions, the Amrita team performed North India’s first intrauterine embolization, successfully stabilizing the baby. The mother later delivered a healthy, full-term child.

Twins Divided by Fate, United by Science

For a mother carrying monochorionic twins affected by Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), the team performed fetoscopic laser photocoagulation to seal abnormal blood vessel connections. Although one twin could not be saved, the healthier twin was delivered neurologically intact at 37 weeks.

“These rare cases demonstrate that unborn children should never be written off,” said Dr. Reema Bhatt. “Every mother deserves to hear, ‘We won’t give up.’ At Amrita, that is our promise.”

Supported by a multi-disciplinary team of obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, pediatric surgeons, and NICU specialists, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, is emerging as North India’s leading centre for fetal medicine, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for such specialized care.
