Dr.Unnikrishnan has been a part of the ENT faculty at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences since January 2009, having joined as Assistant Professor, and then promoted to Associate in 2013.
He completed his medical UG and PG training from Mumbai (MBBS for TNMC and MS from KEM Hospital), followed by obtaining DNB from the National Board of Examinations, in 1996.
He is conversant with all routine ear, nose and throat surgeries. However, his areas of interest are in voice and swallowing disorders and balance disorders, including vertigo. He is in charge of the weekly Voice Clinic at Amrita. He has been an active member of the national laryngology body, the association of phonosurgeons of India (APSI), and is presently its Treasurer. He has regularly presented papers and posters at their national conference (Phonocon), and won awards, including the Best Consultant Paper at last year’s combined international conference. He has a specific interest in surgeries of the larynx (voice box) to improve the voice (Phonosurgery), he also has ongoing research work in this field. He has published many articles in national and international Journals, in this topic. He has authored a chapter each in two textbooks (Laryngology and Dysphagia, respectively).
His other area of interest is in the area of conservative management of various infectious conditions of ENT, hitherto needing surgery.
He is also a team member of the endoscopic skull base surgery team along with neurosurgeon, Dr.Parasuram, especially for the procedure of trans-nasal trans-sphenoid approach to pituitary tumours.
Dr.Unnikrishnan is also intimately involved in academics and teaching programmes at Amrita. He is in charge of the UG teaching schedule (ENT), part of PG dissertation protocol team and active member of the medical education department. With regard to the latter, he has completed the one-year advanced course on medical education (ACME).
His other interest is in quizzing, which he is fond of encouraging amongst the UG students at Amrita, along with conducting and participating in quizzes outside.
