Congenital heart defects (CHDs) affect a large number of newborns and account for a high proportion of infant mortality worldwide. According to the latest statistics, it is estimated that children born with congenital heart disease in India is more than 200,000 per year. Increasing number of infants with the most complex lesions are surviving after surgery until the time of discharge from the hospital, but there remain concerns about out-of-hospital mortality, variability in how services are provided at the time of discharge and beyond. Even though Kerala is pioneering in pediatric cardiac surgery, care required for child before and after hospitalization is not reachable to many population around the state. For successful long-term outcomes, children also need skilled care at home before the surgery and after discharge. The Parent Education Discharge Instruction (PEDI) is an established training program, which was developed to educate nurses on the importance of pre admission as well as discharge teaching and to provide them with a structured process for conducting parent education on home care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. In collaboration with Govt. of Kerala (Hridyam) & Children’s Heart Link, US, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi is conducting PEDI, a one-day training program for 30 Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) Nurses with a live streaming to connect more than 900 RBSK Nurses across Kerala on 2nd November 2019, from 8:30 am to 4:30 PM. The government led RBSK nurses is an outreach program to empower parents at the community level in managing children with congenital heart diseases
