Dr. Sunil completed his MBBS in 1990, MS General Surgery in 1994, MCh CVTS in 1997, all from Trivandrum Medical College. He then worked at SUT Hospital Trivandrum during 1997-1998. He then worked in Amrita Hospital (Paediatric CVTS) during 1998 to 2002. During 2003 - 2005, he worked at Greenlane Hospital, Newzealand. Then joined back at Amrita Hospital in 2006. He then worked as consultant at APOLLO Hyderabad during 2007-2009. Later, joined Amrita Hospital in 2009 as Professor in Paediatric CVTS.

Dr. Sunil has performed more than 5000 operations. He specializes in complex and challenging operations that include correction of complex DORV, paediatric heart valve repair and complex arterial switch procedures. He is known for his exceptional results and his technical finesse has attracted trainees from overseas. He is credited with the first successful Norwood operation for hypoplastic left heart in the state of Kerala.
