A multi-disciplinary team approach at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment of aortic diseases and Marfan syndrome.

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has been a centre of excellence in the field cardiovascular care for more than one and half decades. With the expertise of specialist and state of art imaging techniques the heart team could manage more than 3000 aortic procedures during this period.

Presently in India there is no comprehensive dedicated program for Marfan syndrome. Death due to Marfan syndrome often results from the involvement of aorta and heart valves. Disease of Aorta; both acquired and genetic origin, needs evaluation and treatment by extremely skilled medical professional from different medical specialties in a centre with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Centre for Aortic Diseases and Marfan Syndrome at Amrita would become a referral centre for comprehensive treatment of diseases involving aorta which include endovascular treatment, hybrid procedures, percutaneous valve replacement and the entire spectrum of surgical interventions.

The Amrita Centre for Aortic Diseases and Marfan Syndrome will provide:

  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment
  • Genetic workup in patients with familial disease of aorta like Marfan syndrome and bicuspid aortic valve
  • Apart from Marfan syndrome the centre will diagnose and treat diseases like such as Loeys-Dietz syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and familial aortic aneurysm.
  • Counselling for women in reproductive age group
  • Special antenatal care for Marfan syndrome complicated with pregnancy
  • Periodic check-up for asymptomatic Marfan syndrome patients
  • Care giver support

Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgical team with years’ of experience in cardio-vascular surgical procedures will lead the program with conventional surgeries like valve replacement, Bentall procedure, valve sparing aortic root surgeries, root reinforcement procedure, hybrid procedures for aortic arch diseases and aortic valve repair and thoraco-abdominal and abdominal aneurysm repair.

Radiological investigations are probably one of the most important steps in the investigation and management of aortic diseases and its management. We have state-of-the-art infrastructure for imaging like 264 slice CT, 3.5 tesla MRI scanner and catheterization facility. Diagnostic test, interpretation, scientific input for the proper planning of the interventional procedures will be the role of radiologist in this program.
